Emmax Arts is the practicing name of Emmanuel Chizaram Okereafor, a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Port Harcourt, Nigeria(as at the time this was written). Working across painting, digital art, mixed media, drawing, and photography, his practice moves fluidly between traditional and digital mediums in service of a single visual language he calls Afro-Surrealistic Expressionism.
Originally from Umuohiagu, Ngor Okpala, in Imo State, Emmax Arts studied Applied Arts at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he trained in the uli heritage and tradition and first developed his interest in photography. That grounding in Igbo visual culture remains central to his work today, surfacing in recurring motifs, symbolic colour, and a formal vocabulary he has made distinctly his own, most notably the Spiral Face, a recurring device that strips away differentiating facial features to reveal a shared human essence beneath individual identity. His palette of deep violet, gold, and cream, along with Igbo inflected textures and or forms, gives the work a consistent visual signature across mediums.
Thematically, his practice is serves as a mirror to his immediate society and himself. Telling stories, asking questions and making statement usually leaning towards power, complicity, political corruption, ecological destruction and cultural memory, questions he returns to from different angles across bodies of work, from oil paintings like Ahamefuna (My Name Will Not Be Forgotten), which engages Igbo concepts of legacy and resistance to erasure, to reimaginings of institutional iconography such as Judicial See Finish, a spiral eyed, violet skinned Lady Justice interrogating systemic corruption. His influences include Fela Kuti and Chinua Achebe, figures whose own confrontations with power and memory echo through his imagery.
His work has been exhibited at Quintessence Gallery (Lagos), the Centre for Memories (Enugu), and the Obiora Odechukwu Art Gallery (UNN), among others. Emmax Arts continues to build a body of work rooted in Igbo cultural memory and expressionist Afro-Surrealism, using painting, drawing, and digital media to hold power and complicity up to the light.
